In the September of the same year, Seita also succumbs to malnutrition. With nothing and no one to live for anymore, Seita sets off with his sister’s ashes. With that, he let go of the last bit of hope he was clinging to so desperately. To add insult to injury, he finds out that Japan has surrendered to America. Seita cremates his baby sister and collects her ashes in a tin can. As a last-ditch effort, Seita withdraws the last bit of money that was in his mother’s Bank Account and buys food. She is diagnosed with malnutrition, and if she continues like this, she will die. Things start taking a turn for the worse when Setsuko falls ill. With supplies running out quickly, they must find some way to make do. The Siblings are now forced to send for themselves. This time they decide to move into an abandoned Bomb Shelter. But it was short-lived as the Aunt became abusive over time, and they had to leave their home yet again. However, the truth came out eventually, and the siblings were forced to move in with their aunt. The Older Sibling Seita hides their mother’s death from his younger sister Setsuko.
She perished from the severity of her injuries. The siblings, a boy, and a girl survived the initial bombing. The film takes place in 1945 in Kobe, Japan, in the midst of the Second World War.
It’s a War-Drama Anime film about two siblings. Saying that the ending of the movie is Tragic is an understatement. Grave of the Butterflies is one of those anime movies that will have you reach for the tissues.
